What is proof-reading & editing?
Proof-reading & editing is when you send me an electronic document that you have written and I check it. All documents must be in Microsoft WORD for PCs. I normally use ‘track changes’ – a feature on Microsoft WORD which allows you to see what changes I have made. I also use the comments feature which inserts comments explaining why I have made certain changes. In this way, you should learn from the corrections and develop your language at the same time. Don’t worry – if you are not familiar with ‘track changes’, I can help you.
Proof-reading & editing includes the following:
- Review of grammar, spelling, punctuation
- Review of sentence and paragraph structure, and general organisation
- Help avoiding repetition of vocabulary
- Advice on style (i.e. formal, neutral, informal)
- Advice on register (e.g. academic, business, professional, general etc.)
Proof-reading & editing does NOT include writing any part of the document for you, finding or reading the sources for your piece of work.
Why use proof-reading & editing services?
Using a professional proof-reading and editing service guarantees that your ideas are being communicated clearly and effectively. When you have spent a long time working on a document, there is a danger of becoming ‘too close’ to it and as a result, ‘blind’ to errors or sections which are unclear. That is to say, you only see what you think you have written and not what you have actually written. A proof-reader/editor is a fresh, unbiased, pair of eyes who can identify any parts of the text which need improvement. This can range from simply correcting grammatical or lexical errors to the complete restructuring of a whole paragraph. The way we communicate with others can leave a lasting impression, and therefore investing in such a service enables us to present ourselves in our most positive and professional light.
